To see and listen to Nature: the whispering of the air, the movement of trees, the harmony of ever-changing leaves, the morning dew, the crystalline afternoon light, blinding, the endless horizon where mountains show their non-stopping  profile, the symphony of clouds, the music of rain, the singing of birds, all that and more is what lovingly does and glosses Beatriz, listening to that hunch, transforming it into beautiful variations of grey, of coal black, making tree and stone dialogue, rosemary and broom, spreading on the flat surface the result of her attentive attitude, the listening to Nature which never disappoints, enriching permanently her creations by looking, by listening, that is to say, by feeling.

Comments by JOSÉ HIERRO about the water-colours and etchings Exhibition at the Tórculo Gallery  in Madrid. March 2000

Beautiful simple things, of our everyday life, but magical, surprising despite the fact that they live in our company, are the choice of Beatriz Ujados for her paintings. The artist nears them with reverence and respect, without the insolent security of the hyperrealist who leans on his skill, but at the same time doesn’t take any notice of the communion with the soul of reality, grasped by the Art.

What Beatriz does is to hide behind the paper. She wants us to believe that the things are together in it by chance, without needing the creating hand that has taken part to grasp it and make it essential. She paints and etches with a secure hand and a blushing face as if she were afraid of offending with her mastery of plastic expression.

The security of her hand – and again I say that we are far from the hyperrealistic boasting – is proved by the simplicity and the austerity of the means used. It is fundamental not to fall in the rhetorical, not to tell with four words what can be said with two. That is why she reduces everything to its spiritual skeleton dematerialising fruits and pots. Her water-colours are pure transparent water, slightly tinted of pink and grey, scents of a colour abandoned by a brush running away to who knows which cloud.

Symmetrical and complementary, her etchings confirm what was insinuated in her water-colours. The memory of the effort and slow and painful work - enemy of surprises by fate –, has also disappeared from the copper plates. Nevertheless, for he who can see, the job of chisels and acids, everything that is skill, can be felt converted in a personal technique in those colours, tones and delicate shades obtained by the superposition of printings.

But yet again, I discover what I already knew: that every comment about an artistic fact is usually a senseless torrent of words without a value, lower than what is being commented. Art is self-sufficient and each one can rationalise his feelings without trying to impose his comments on the others. To see and be silent, that is the rule. A rule that I have not followed. josé Hierro
